Bridgetown DIY, a music, art and social center based in La Puente, gave free masks and bottles of hand sanitizer to residents on Wednesday, April 30. And it’s looking to give out more.

According to founding member Cameron Hughes, the organization gave nearly 100 masks and 60 sanitizer bottles to residents via drive-thru at its location in a strip mall.

Usually, Bridgetown is a social center and collective that hosts concerts, art events or other community events. Hughes describes it as a community space meant for community organizing.

But since the coronavirus pandemic has kept everyone sheltered in place, Hughes said the group felt a need to contribute to the community.

“We have always had an interest in ensuring we can give as much as we can to the community as possible,” Hughes said by phone on Monday. “At this moment, masks seemed like the easiest thing we could give away for free to our community.”

So they collected donations of cloth masks and bought more using their own funds. Wednesday’s giveaway was Bridgetown’s second donation event. Hughes said the group wants to continue hosting events like this.

“We see ourselves as a hub for distribution,” he said. “We knew of people in the San Gabriel Valley that were sewing masks and didn’t have a place to distribute them.”

Bridgetown DIY is looking for people to donate masks. They can be dropped off at 1421 N. Valinda Ave., La Puente.
