Employees at Spin Master, an international children’s entertainment and toy company, were brainstorming in early April on how to help front-line healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

The proverbial light bulb came on when they took a fresh look at one of their most successful family games, HedBanz, a “What Am I?” guessing game during which players wear blue, plastic headbands that have a notch to insert a playing card that is illustrated with an animal, food or an object.

The team, inspired by their game’s headband, first came up with a prototype face shield to help protect healthcare workers from coronavirus. The prototype was a success and now the company is producing 20,000 face shields a day from three different facilities. The shields are individually packed in sanitized areas for safe distribution.

Hospitals in the Los Angeles area currently scheduled to receive the face shields include Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente-Los Angeles Medical Center and Providence Holy Cross Medical Center.

The company, with offices in Los Angeles and its home office in Toronto, Canada, is asking for other hospitals to request the personal protective equipment from Spin Master by email. The requests must be for front-line healthcare workers only.

The company reports that they have already sent out 107,000 units to 30 healthcare centers that include Mexico, New York and Toronto. Healthcare facilities in California, France, Israel and the United Kingdom are scheduled to receive face shields in the coming weeks.
