Thursday, temperatures continue to climb in the region’s first heatwave of the year, prompting forecasters to urge area residents to protect themselves against heat-related illnesses.

Today’s high is predicted to top out at 93, and Friday’s at 94, under clear and cloudless blue skies.

A heat advisory was issued effective from 11 a.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday.

“Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses to occur,” warned the National Weather Service. “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances” as temperatures inside a parked vehicle can quickly turn lethal.

The weather service urged people who work outdoors to take extra precautions.

“When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.”

Temperatures will begin to slowly decline Saturday.
