All construction workers without symptoms will now be able to sign up for free COVID-19 tests, joining other “essential” workers that recently became eligible over the past week, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said.
The news comes after other workers were added to the list of people who can register for free tests at more than 30 sites across the county.
Those other categories include grocery workers, healthcare workers, delivery people, taxi and rideshare drivers, first responders and critical government workers.
It was unclear Tuesday what other specific jobs may fit under the umbrella of workers identified by the mayor this past week.
The announcement comes as public officials express concern over the role of asymptomatic people in spreading COVID-19.
In addition to testing more workers, public officials are now also making an effort to test both symptomatic and asymptomatic people at institutional settings such as nursing homes and homeless shelters.
Such workers cannot directly sign up, but would need to ask their employers about how to register for an appointment.
A mayoral aide said that their office has been disseminating information about test sign-ups to employers.
