HBO’s new “Perry Mason” series debuts June 21 — featuring of some of the scenes shot last summer and fall in and around San Pedro.

Among the locations were scenes on Seventh Street in downtown San Pedro, where crews didn’t have to do much to turn it into a 1932 streetscape.

A string of historic buildings in the 300 block of West Seventh Street were dressed up with retro-canvas awnings, vintage signage and some old-style window displays for the series.

The “new” old look drew raves on social media, where locals said the street never looked so good. Many said the look should be incorporated as improvements on building facades moved forward.

The new original series, which stars Emmy winner Matthew Rhys, is based on characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner.

Set in 1930s Los Angeles, the show follows the early years of the legendary-but-fictional criminal defense lawyer, who was the leading character of a popular television series starring Raymond Burr from 1957 to 1966.
