Man killed in La Verne on the 210 Freeway is identified as Alta Loma resident

Officials identified the man as Alexander Penafiel, 32, of Alta Loma.

Authorities Tuesday identified a man who was killed Sunday in a solo crash on the 210 Freeway in La Verne.

Alexander Penafiel, 32, of Alta Loma died at the scene of the crash that occurred about 6 p.m. Sunday on the westbound 210 Freeway at the Fruit Street off-ramp, according to the coroner’s office and the California Highway Patrol.

Penafiel, who drove a 1999 Nissan Sentra, lost control of the car after abruptly changing lanes, the CHP said in an incident report.

In an attempt to avoid hitting a car in front of him, Penafiel slammed on his breaks and veered off the road. The car hit a dirt embankment, causing the car to overturn and strike a metal pole. Upon impact, Penafiel was launched from the car.

The CHP report said Penafiel was traveling at an unsafe speed considering the traffic and weather conditions.

Authorities also said alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash.
