Pedestrian dies after being struck by vehicle in Alhambra

Several witnesses saw the man step off the curb without yielding to oncoming traffic.

A man died after he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross a street in Alhambra Saturday morning, April 25, authorities said.

Alhambra officers responded to Garfield Avenue and Shorb Street about 7:50 a.m. on a report of an accident involving a pedestrian, Sgt. Steven Carr said.

The pedestrian, a 40-year-old Alhambra resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, Carr said. The pedestrian was not identified pending notification of his relatives.

The driver of the vehicle stopped and cooperated with officers, Carr said. The driver and several witnesses told police the pedestrian stepped off the east curb on Garfield Avenue without yielding to traffic just before he was struck.

Drugs or alcohol were not factors in the crash for the driver, who was not arrested. Police were investigating whether the pedestrian may have been under the influence, Carr said.
